Your Texas CDL Getting Started Checklist
Use this planning checklist before purchasing services or arranging travel. Confirm current requirements with Texas DPS and the applicable training provider.
Choose your license goal
Identify Class A or Class B and any Passenger, School Bus or HazMat endorsement. Discuss vehicle type, brakes and transmission restrictions with the office.
Check permit and document requirements
Review the official DPS commercial license checklist. Confirm identity, residency, medical and self-certification requirements for your situation.
Plan your knowledge tests and permit
Confirm the knowledge tests for your class and endorsements, obtain the required learner permit and check the applicable waiting period before skills testing.
Verify your ELDT requirements
Confirm whether theory and behind-the-wheel range and road training apply. Check the provider listing and completion records. Theory and behind-the-wheel services may involve separate providers.
Match services to your experience
Describe your driving, backing and vehicle-inspection experience honestly. Ask whether self-directed resources and vehicle familiarization fit your needs or whether you need a comprehensive instructional program.
Confirm your DPS appointment and test vehicle
Verify the testing office, date, appointment requirements, permit eligibility, required payments and appropriate vehicle availability directly with DPS and the rental provider.
Get the full service terms
Request current itemized pricing, fuel charges, rental terms, cancellation and retest terms. Confirm any complimentary ELDT conditions in writing.
Prepare for your visit
Bring your required originals and requested records, a clipboard and pens. Dress for outdoor conditions and ask about footwear and weather arrangements.

Prospect privacy notice
This service stores the contact details you submit, your CDL interest, the website where you submitted the form, request dates and subscription choices. We use your email to deliver the checklist. Tips and offers require the separate optional checkbox and email confirmation. Providing a phone number does not subscribe you to calls or texts.
If you permit analytics on a participating website, we record page paths, referring domain, time, originating website, a rotating keyed connection identifier and—when the offline database is installed—approximate city, region, country and network organization. We do not derive your email from your IP address, collect precise location, or store raw IP addresses in this application's analytics database. Consented analytics records are retained for 90 days. Hosting providers may retain separate security logs.
Unsubscribe using any marketing email. To request access, correction or deletion of your prospect details, contact the business through Get Your CDL Quick. We retain subscription and suppression records to manage your preferences. Email delivery uses our configured service provider. This service operates separately from customer registration.
